A história do Corvette SR-2 é muito interessante com um charme peculiar. O primeiro SR-2 começou como um projeto de pai para filho. Harley Earl, o então todo poderoso vice presidente de Design da GM e o homem que criou o Corvette, tinha um pequeno problema: Seu filho Jerry Earl era um entusiasta e piloto. Mas o problema ficou pior porque Jerry tinha uma Ferrari e esse era o carro que ele usava para competir. Não era qualquer Ferrari mas sim uma 250 MM Vignale 1953.

Dificilmente você não é notado correndo com uma Ferrari e sendo filho de Harley Earl. Dessa forma o alto escalão da GM mandou o pai pedir para o filho parar de correr com uma Ferrari. Assim, como bom pai, ao invés de proibir Jerry de correr, Earl resolve fazer um acordo com o seu filho. "Filho, se você vender a sua Ferrari eu vou lhe construir um Corvette especial para correr." Depois que a idéia se concretizou, Bill Mitchell que era o braço direito de Earl (e seu sucessor, o responsável pelo futuro Stingray) também quis um SR-2. Foi construido um segundo SR-2 mas no final um terceiro foi feito para o presidente da GM na época, Harlow Curtice para ser um show car. O terceiro carro que era o show car não tinha freios de competição bem como alguns detalhes técnicos importantes. Todos os 3 carros nasceram em St. Louis como Corvettes de série sendo posteriormente mandados para o estúdio de design em Warren, Michingan para modificações cosméticas e preparação de corrida. O primeiro Corvette dado à Jerry tinha o número de chassis (vin) E56F002522 e foi concluido na primavera de 1956. O carro de Jerry Earl era azul e o de Mitchell vermelho, permanecem assim até hoje.

Aqui podemos ver bem as diferenças aerodinâmicas do primeiro SR-2 antes e depois das mudanças feitas no inverno de 1956/1957. Naturalmente não dá para ver as mudanças mecânicas que citamos antes.

O SR-2 de Bill Mitchell (carro vermelho) (vin E56S002532) foi terminado em 4 de Setembro de 1956. Em 7 de Fevereiro de 1957 competiu em Daytona e chegou em primeiro na classe Standing Mile, Buck Baker foi o piloto com a marca de 93,047 mph. Depois chegou em segundo na classe Flying Mile com a marca de 152,866 mph. No dia 23 de Março terminou em décimo sexto na geral das 12 horas de Sebring. A última competição oficial pela GM foi em primeiro de Dezembro de 1957. Antes o SR-2 conseguiu uma vitória no Tourist Trophy e também outra vitória no Governor's Trophy em Nassau nas Bahamas. No fim, Edd Rose Jr do Texas comprou o carro em Janeiro de 1958.

Existe uma réplica do SR-2 em São Paulo. O dono é muito perfecionista e está cuidando de alguns detalhes do carro para ficar ainda mais igual ao original. Vi a réplica paulista da SR-2 no sambódromo de São Paulo. Fiquei impressionado com a disposição do dono em transformar uma C1 na SR-2.
